Muay Thai Training Techniques

Muay Thai is a Thai mixed martial art form. It has many techniques of fighting. During treatment with Muay Thai techniques, also known as "Mae May Muay Thai use," fighters of the entire body including fists, elbows, shins, feet and knees.

The basic Muay Thai training techniques include punch techniques (jab, straight right / cross, hook and uppercut), elbow techniques (horizontal, diagonal-upwards, diagonal downwards, uppercut,downward, backward-spinning and flying) and kicking techniques (push kick, roundhouse kick, etc.). Following are some specific techniques, Muay Thai:

The Clinch

This technique will be used exclusively in Muay Thai fights. During the fight the fighter is the technique by his opponent either around the neck and head or around the body. It is as well known Thai Clinch.

To clinch is applicable to be holding the fightersOpponent either around the neck and head or around the body. The fighter has also press his forearm against his opponent's collar bone while his hands are around the head of the latter, rather than the neck.

Clinch a common technique used in Muay Thai fights to his head, then tap enter throw down. The fighter can also throw the opponent to let in his case, the latter with a knee from the right. It can cause the opponent to lose his balance.
The Kru

This is a difficult technique. A new fighter takes a lot of training and hard work to learn this technique. The technique is obtained from the Krue fighters or Thai boxing training. The trainer makes the fighter to work hard and learn the technique. It is a tradition for the fighters to bring about his respects to his coach expressed by a ritual called Wai Kru.

There are some elements that are part of the Muay Thai training techniques. These include: --

• Running - A trainee has (at 18 km running per day for about 12 km in the first half and run) about 6 km in the second half.

• Stretching - The student has to do, a distance of approximately 20-30 minutes. It improves elasticity and reduces the muscle stretch reflex.

• Shadow Boxes - This training will consist of approximately 20 minutes of shadow boxing. Shadow boxing is practiced normally before a mirror.

Muay ThaiTraining takes a lot of hard work. To be a good young fighter must go through a lot of physical and psychological stress. It takes pure dedication, commitment and never-say-die "attitude that a trainee becomes a good Muay Thai fighter.

I used a pair of 16 oz (or perhaps they were 14, it was hard to tell) Everlast gloves, which I hated. They were all cheap and the black foam, which was peeling from them. I even got a boxer from the break with them because they do not keep my hands tight enough and the foam is much more difficult to hit precisely the bag. I would also occasionally cuts on my hands with my old gloves and bleed it, it was terrible.

These gloves are a world of difference. You are definitely genuine leather and a month after I started with them (at least twice per week for one hour) I can still smell the leather (although I hickory chips in a sock, within smelling good - you can glove dogs). I have to be afraid, sometimes up to the bag, because I knew that a small error could mean severe pain in my hand, but with these gloves, I feel like I can not do wrong - a bad blow just means a slight hit not bruised ankle. I think my weak beats are really swinging the bag with these gloves, whereas my old hardly move in the bag. When we roll with Mitts I hear a pop sound really easy with gloves, as these, how well the density of the foam is on the inside.

Also nice is the gel on the palm, allowing you to catch blows. There is no strap, but they fit quite closely for me (I have 14 ounces in black) and I do not think there is a problem for everyone. The black bar at the bottom can be used to help pull the gloves on the hands.

I am very happy with these gloves. The only thing I can imagine that is wrong with them is the lining. It is a beautiful satin lining, but when hitting the bag really aggressive it may be that a lot of friction, can cause redness in the ankle. If you only have a few packs for $ 5 your hands, alleviates the problem quite easily, and carrying packs on your hands under the gloves is good practice anyway.

I know they are a little expensive, but worth the extra money. The difference in quality between my gloves and some of my classmates also to my teachers. Plus, a programmer, I really my hands - so if your livelihood depends on your hands, then these gloves are a sound investment to make them safe, while a large training and have fun.

Excellent historical value

Great DVD! Covered the history of Muay Thai in detail. Including the dance of kings ... perhaps too much time was spent on the dance. Most of the movie was filmed in the ancient ruins. I have the DVD, but very little time was for the actual boxing. There were many shots of different strokes, kicks, elbows, etc., but very little, how-to. Nevertheless, I plan on it just over and over again.

This book was too low on detail. Gives very little instruction on HOW to perform moves and the photos are no help at all. While it does give a good background on muay thai history and gives an excellent vocabulary for the moves, I just felt that it was not very helpful for touching up my technique or learning from. If you're looking to learn HOW to do muay thai, I recommend NOT buying this book - you'll be as disappointed as I was.

Customer Review: Nice to watch, but NOT a good instructional.

Master K is awesome, no doubt, but this dvd is merely an overview of Muay Thai and not an instructional teaching aid. And, since it is very expensive as far as dvd's go, you would be real wise to look elsewhere. The instructional dvd's to get, in order, are Duke Roufus boxed set, Razor McCullough boxed set, and the ones by Saekson Janjira(volumes 1 & 2). All 3 are exceptional and the Razor McCullough 3 disc set is the same price as the Master K seminar dvd.

Kru Vut does an excellent job on this tape of explaining the execution and variations of knees, round kicks, teeps and side kicks. His explanation of how to do the movements, ways to use hips to generate power, and the motions he has the viewer mimic are very instrumental in learning how to deliver powerful technical kicks. Watching this tape served to enhance my kicking ability with improved technique. This is one of the best tapes Ive seen in terms of technical instruction and maximizing execution and varied applications. The only other tape which exceeds this one in instructional value is by surachai sirisute from WTN Kunf Fu Productions video. This tape will allow a beginner to learn muay thai kicking and kneeing on his own and will serve to enhance an experienced practitioners game

Customer Review: Dissapointing

Given that there is little information available on Muay Boran in any format, I decided to give this book a try. From the product description it sounded interesting at least, but after reading through it I was extremely dissapointed. The format reads more like a series of articles thrown together than a cohesive work.The translation to English is so poor that it makes it almost unreadable. I've never heard elbows referred to as "pokes" or hands referred to as "beaters." Or to paraphrase "to become master in thai art martial required of diligent practices." What is that supposed to mean? The whole book is like that. The pictures at times have no correlation with each other or are cut off halfway, and there is no information on stances, footwork, or instructions on how to perform any of the techniques. Apparently the author thinks wearing shorts with "Muay Thai Boran" and wrapping his hands in rope make up for that. Like the review for De Cesaris's other Muay Boran book mentioned, he spends too much time talking about what a savior to the Thai martial arts he is. Funny I can't find any legitimate sources for all the titles he supposedly holds. There is nothing "advanced" about the techniques in this book, and nothing you wouldn't learn after several months of training at a Thai gym. If you are really interested in Muay Thai pick up the Saekson Janjira DVD series. Solid fundamentals are what you build off of, and the techniques shown on the DVD's are consistent with what is actually taught in the gym. If you are still interested in Muay Boran, look for an ebook called "Muay Thai: The Art of Fighting." While the translation is poor the pictures are very clear and show basically every Muay Boran technique that is known. Or look up Bokator on YouTube to get an idea of what SE Asia martials arts should be. In short don't waste your money on this book.

Customer Review: Everything You Would Expect In A Pair of Muay Thai Shorts

I have had a pair of these muay thai shorts (although the pair I have is slightly different) for a couple of years now and have found them to be very durable and are still holding up well even after hundreds of workouts and about a third as many washes in the washing machine and dryer.
I haven't had any fraying, other than the normal amount, during this time period and I don't expect to really need any additional shorts as these ones are holding up just fine. The elastic is still strong and hasn't lost much, if any, of its elasticity over the past couple of years.

Customer Review: Accurate, factual, humble, dated

The author Zoran Rebac is level-headed and appears immune to the hype and BS often associated with martial arts. He accurately states that muay thai is a hard-nosed ring sport descended from more brutal fighting methods. Rebac is from eastern Europe. This book is a translation, so the writing is fairly concrete; if there were more nuances they were lost in translation. Rebac put in his time; he trained in the camps, did his roadwork and took his knocks. Rebac trained in SE Asia in the early 1980's, so this book predates the rise of Thai Boxing in the US and the aerobo-"kickboxing" fad.

Customer Review: Bag work

I have been using these for about two months now and couldn't be happier with my purchase.
The pads are enclosed in a heavy sock-like material which breathes very well. They slip on with little effort and are taken off with a bit more effort; I don't like equipment that feels like you will break or tear it by pulling too hard trying to take it off- no worries with this product.
The pads are nice and thick without being too thick. There is plenty padding to keep from breaking your shins, but not so much that you have no feedback.
For a point of reference: I do not spar with these- I use them for bag work (Heavy bag- 100 lbs). Would I feel confident using these in sparring? Absolutely (I am just not sparring right now).
I am picky enough about my equipment that I don't give 5 stars lightly - I honestly could find no fault with these.

These are top-of-the-line leather and neoprene grappling shin instep pads. Used for grappling, MMA, Muay Thai, and kickboxing. They are NOT intended for beginners or casual students. They are serious gear if you don't want to mess with the cheap stuff and want something that's going to hold up to STRENEOUS workouts.

There is a key difference between these pads and others: no straps on the back of your leg.

They have a high quality leather front with extremely high density foam padding. That's on top of a fully enclosed neoprene "sock" for your calf and an extra elastic strap under your instep (so they don't ride up your leg). Not super easy to get on and off, but very comfortable when you're using them.

Because the neoprene encloses your entire calf, they don't slip around when your fighting takes you to the ground. However, with no leg straps, nothing is cutting into the back of your calf. A VERY welcome change from the pads with straps.

Also, because the padding on the front is so dense, these are VERY popular with anyone doing Muay Thai or kick boxing. For most other "stand-up" arts (where you rarely go to the ground for any length of time), these are overkill and, honestly, you can find cheaper pads that would work just as well.

These have a "traditional" Muay Thai lace/cord tie around the top of the calf. Used to help keep the pads secure - though we find the laces aren't really needed. You can obviously keep them tucked in (or cut them off like we do for grappling).

If you're looking at pair of pads (whether you get them from us or not) make sure you can see the back of the pads. If they don't tell you different, the pads are using straps to hold the shin pad to your leg and they are NOT the same thing.

These are truly some of the finest pads on the market and, if you're a serious martial artist, they are worth every penny.

The back where they tie together is starting to tear at the seam after a few months of use, but I don't think they will fall apart any time soon.

I really liked this video. Walter "sleeper" shows many variations of thai training on the heavybag, thai pads , and the banana bag. He shows a great deal of variations in terms of using the thai pads, various defensive guards and a multitude of variations used when striking the pads. Demonstrations are shown of how to use the thai pads, how to spar, short traing sets to use for conditioning, and clinch training. This would be a great addition to any muay thai library. Walter is particularly good at transmitting a thai flavor in his attitude and the way he throws his strikes. It is a nice glimpse into the thai mindset of training. You will enjoy and learn a lot from this video. I would rate this more of an intermediate rather than beginners video since it assumes you know how to do the basic strikes of punching, elbows, kneeing and using the thai teep and round kicks.

While this book does have some good information, and lots of photos to demonstrate techniques, the author doesn't even actually seem to demonstrate that he realizes any difference between muay thai and kick boxing. All in all, i would rather not have bought this book, but am not terribly upset that i did. So, not a terrible buy, but don't expect too much.

The book "Muay Thai: Advanced Thai Kickboxing Techniques" by Christoph Delp shows that the author has gained experience in fighting and training in Thailand. The techniques range from basic up to some I haven't even heard of, despite the years I have worked out in Thailand. This book is very good to use additional to the daily work out in the gym. Of course a book can't teach you how to become a good fighter, but even some "professionals" should take the chance to re-read some of the excellent descriptions regarding the shown techniques! Additional to the good text work, the photos are making it easy to follow the different movements. Reading the book and the included interviews plus viewing the photos of the thai-stars and high officials, gives you an impression on how the special atmosphere in Thailand is like. All in all for me this is the only book that was written out of the view and the experiences of someone (a farang) who lived and practiced in Thailand not somewhere else! Excellent work.

Customer Review: Authentic instruction on Bare Knuckle Muay Thai!

This disk is part of a two disk set featuring Colonel Amnat Pooksrisuk, a member of the World Muay Thai Council and a career solider who graduated from the US war college. I decided to review both disks together, because anyone serious about learning the basics of bare knuckle Muay Thai should consider getting both.
The DVD's to a great job in laying down the basic foundation behind the bare knuckle arts of Thailand. Although the Colonel has a think accent, his instruction is very clear. I've heard BJJ guys from Brazil that were worse, so it really wasn't an issue.
Vol 1 lays the foundation & gives basic principals and techniques. Vol 2 focuses on skill development exercises that help build the physical structure behind the techniques. Both disks have solo exercises that remind me of the RMAX biomechanical movements Scott Sonnon teaches. For example, opening & closing your fingers "with intent" has made my grip much stronger. I can make a much tighter fist than before - something important for bare knuckle or MMA fighting. It's amazing that something so simple can make such a difference.
He even teaches a defense similar to the Crazy Monkey/shelling technique a lot of MMA guys have used the past few years. Funny to think that a defensive structure hundreds (thousands?) of years old was a fairly recent development in modern MMA. I was also surprised to see the Colonel teaching the looping punch used by MMA fighters like Chuck Liddel & Fedor, as well as footwork to set up strikes against the takedown. He also covered techniques to break the Thai neck clinch that I haven't seen before - some of this stuff could've saved Rich Franklin's belt & nose when he lost to Anderson Silva.
MMA fighters really need to get both disks. The techniques & training methods could have an immediate impact your striking game. If you are serious about the finer details of bare knuckle striking, this is the set is for you.

True its just an Intro. Tape. Not a true example of Master K

This review is partly a response to Msmitty's review. In defense of MasterK. The tape was developed by a third party who appeared one day at the gym and pretty much dictated the content of the tape. Quite simply, they attempted to make money using MasterK on the tape.

For a true example of MasterK's ability, I recommend that a serious Muay Thai student check out Master K's website http://www.masterkelbowko.com/ and order his other videos. They are much better and provide better instruction. Also there are video clips on the website demostrating MasterK working through some drills.. While watching the drills keep in mind MasterK is now in his 60s. I don't know too many 60+ grandfathers who has the fitness and ability of MasterK as well as breadth of knowledge.

As for the other review questiong MasterK's ability. If you think the video speaks volumes of this ability, I question the type of "muay thai" instruction you receive. True in some gyms you see students who look like they belong in the K1 and that other reviewer complained that the students in MasterK's video looked amateurish, well for one.. Some of MasterK's students are amateur. MasterK isn't looking to hit it big and retire from his Muay Thai videos. This is a man who enjoys teaching Muay Thai. I trained with MasterK for a couple of years and I can definitely say he knows his stuff. MasterK believes in teaching the art of real Muay Thai and not just trying to make a quick buck advertising in black belt magazine (MasterK did have a center article on Muay Thai in the March 2004 BlackBelt Magazine).

By the way..students of the martial arts shouldn't assume that a "video" is the end all of an instructors abilities. Get off your lazy ass and attend a class or research the instructor. Just because they weren't on the K1, UFC, Pride, or their name wasn't Alex Gong (God rest his soul) doesn't mean the instructor is horrible. Many great instructors dont have videos but have a huge underground/city/neighborhood following.

As for this video. It's not a bad video, but you would be better served by going to MasterK's website and ordering his other 4 videos which are a better representation of his ab ilities. They are well worth the money. http://www.masterkelbowko.com/

These are top-of-the-line leather and neoprene grappling shin instep pads. Used for grappling, MMA, Muay Thai, and kickboxing. They are NOT intended for beginners or casual students. They are serious gear if you don't want to mess with the cheap stuff and want something that's going to hold up to STRENEOUS workouts.

There is a key difference between these pads and others: no straps on the back of your leg.

They have a high quality leather front with extremely high density foam padding. That's on top of a fully enclosed neoprene "sock" for your calf and an extra elastic strap under your instep (so they don't ride up your leg). Not super easy to get on and off, but very comfortable when you're using them.

Because the neoprene encloses your entire calf, they don't slip around when your fighting takes you to the ground. However, with no leg straps, nothing is cutting into the back of your calf. A VERY welcome change from the pads with straps.

Also, because the padding on the front is so dense, these are VERY popular with anyone doing Muay Thai or kick boxing. For most other "stand-up" arts (where you rarely go to the ground for any length of time), these are overkill and, honestly, you can find cheaper pads that would work just as well.

These have a "traditional" Muay Thai lace/cord tie around the top of the calf. Used to help keep the pads secure - though we find the laces aren't really needed. You can obviously keep them tucked in (or cut them off like we do for grappling).

If you're looking at pair of pads (whether you get them from us or not) make sure you can see the back of the pads. If they don't tell you different, the pads are using straps to hold the shin pad to your leg ? and they are NOT the same thing.

These are truly some of the finest pads on the market and, if you're a serious martial artist, they are worth every penny.

Unexpected

A bit difficult to put on and take off, but that's the beauty of it, it does'nt move from where you place it. You can kick the wall and you barely feel it. Also try to check out there other items, really good quality.

This probably isn't where I need to say this but I was looking at one book to order and in the mix of looking for a better offer and so on I ended up with two books ordered from two different people and couldn't change it so I inadvertinatly bought both. Great writing, compulsively readable

Maybe my favorite book of the last 2 years. The only book I've given out as a gift more than once - to my martial arts teacher, and to a co-worker who appreciates MMA.
Highlights for me: Sam writes well. He's simply a clear, thoughtful writer who reminds me of Hemingway. Clear, simple - but with real insight and smarts, and toughness. The story is fascinating. Makes me want to retrace his steps though the modern gravity wells of fighting - Bangkok, Brasil, Northern California, NYC, the US midwest.
Read it if you enjoy the strategy dimension of MMA, and wonder what motivates these guys to test themselves in combat.

Authentic instruction on Bare Knuckle Muay Thai!

This disk is part of a two disk set featuring Colonel Amnat Pooksrisuk, a member of the World Muay Thai Council and a career solider who graduated from the US war college. I decided to review both disks together, because anyone serious about learning the basics of bare knuckle Muay Thai should consider getting both.
The DVD's to a great job in laying down the basic foundation behind the bare knuckle arts of Thailand. Although the Colonel has a think accent, his instruction is very clear. I've heard BJJ guys from Brazil that were worse, so it really wasn't an issue.
Vol 1 lays the foundation & gives basic principals and techniques. Vol 2 focuses on skill development exercises that help build the physical structure behind the techniques. Both disks have solo exercises that remind me of the RMAX biomechanical movements Scott Sonnon teaches. For example, opening & closing your fingers "with intent" has made my grip much stronger. I can make a much tighter fist than before - something important for bare knuckle or MMA fighting. It's amazing that something so simple can make such a difference.
He even teaches a defense similar to the Crazy Monkey/shelling technique a lot of MMA guys have used the past few years. Funny to think that a defensive structure hundreds (thousands?) of years old was a fairly recent development in modern MMA. I was also surprised to see the Colonel teaching the looping punch used by MMA fighters like Chuck Liddel & Fedor, as well as footwork to set up strikes against the takedown. He also covered techniques to break the Thai neck clinch that I haven't seen before - some of this stuff could've saved Rich Franklin's belt & nose when he lost to Anderson Silva.
MMA fighters really need to get both disks. The techniques & training methods could have an immediate impact your striking game. If you are serious about the finer details of bare knuckle striking, this is the set is for you.

This is probably the weakest of the 3 tape series by the "Sleeper". Walter does show some basic conditioning exercises which include plyometric jumps on and off the ring platform, skip knees using the ropes, uphill windsprints, dumbell incline presses, push presses, and some neck exercises without weights (no bridges). He also gives an overview of the basic thai strikes. He gives very little explanation of the mechanics/technical aspects of the strikes. It would be better assumed you are at intermediate level knowing the basics and how to throw them effectively. Some interesting tips Ive never seen before about the switch kick and teep. This aspect of thai training is where Walter's strength lies and which he would be able to exploit into more videos. It is clear he is very knowledgeable in muay thai and has trained awhile in thailand. I wish he would produce more with that theme. His sleeper machine is using the cable crossovers in a way to strengthen the thai plumb and knee strikes. I havent seen this before or the tips on striking techniques using the switch kick and teep. it made up for the weaker parts of the tape. By far, the weakest part of the tape was the self-defense drills. there were 6-7 techniques consisting of parrying a punch to an elbow, knee, and continuing into a wristlock (gooseneck) or a chicken wing/hammlerlock. I wished he filled this part of the tape with more tips on striking and movement. If I could do it over again I would buy his tapes in this order: tape 2 (a must), tape 1 (which shows him doing some conditioning and footage of him kicking and elbowing heavybags full of sand)- the attitude conveyed here alone is worth the tape price, and finally tape 3 is a question mark. If you arent familiar with conditioning exercises mentioned above you might want to buy it if you have the spare cash...

This is one great video. Real bad quality taping. Looks like someone was sitting in the background taping with a video camera when they weren't supposed too. But, you know what, the footage is REAL, no fake dog-and-pony show. The fights are brutal. You see elbows to the head and blood, even a guy missing a kick and flying over the ropes. Had he connected the other guy would be dead. Real fighting as it is done in Thailand. Raw, unedited, no nonsense training in a 3rd world country at its best and worst at the same time. A must for your collection, or have a few buddies over to watch, yell and laugh.

Customer Review: Good for those new to Muay Thai

I practice another style and bought this to get a feel for Muay Thai's kicks and knee strikes. Master K is amazing for his age and I get the sense that he really knows what he's talking about. There isn't a ton of step by step instruction here, but if you watch carefullly, you'll pick up a lot of tips from a true master of the art. I also picked up some new training methods, especially for the thai pads and heavy bag. The style of kicking used in Muay Thai is really brutal or as the guy on tape says, "Brutally Elegant."

The format of this DVD is more seminar or class workout than a step by step instructional. You can tell by watching Master K that he's spent a lot of years in the ring. He has to be in his 50s but he demonstrations kicks and strikes full power on his students and knocks more than one of them across the floor. As he coaches students, demonstrates and explains the techniques here, he drops in a lot of important little tips and insight. I've watched this DVD three times now and each time I find something else to take back to the gym and work on. This isn't a DVD for beginners but if you have some ring experience, you'll definitely find some wisdom here. Well worth the price of admission.

Wrestling for Fighting is an essential addition to anyone's MMA library.

The other reviews have already done a good job of describing the contents of this book but in brief:

The first section of the book covers basic wrestling.
The second section is Greco wrestling (upper body wrestling/throws).
The thrid section covers wrestling techniques used in MMA.

This is a very high quality book (as are all the books co-authored by Krauss and Cordoza). It is full of photos showing the techniques from mutliple angles. The written instruction is thorough and easy to understand.

Some things to keep in mind. As the title hints, this is a book about wrestling. What you're getting is a top notch instructional on all aspects of wrestling by one of the greatest wrestling based MMA fighters of all time. Do not buy it expecting to learn submissions (other than a few basic "wrestling" subs) or standup striking (though there is plenty of ground n' pound instruction). This of course does not detract from the book in any way. There are already excellent books that cover striking and submissions. And since wrestling is an important, if not arguably the most important aspect of MMA (deciding where the fight takes place), it deserves its own volume.

Great Historical Book
I've been looking for this book for a while and finally found it. It was recommended by Ajarn Chai Sirisute who I had the honor to meet in 2006 along with Guro Dan Inosanto. It's a great book for historical facts and there are techniques (basics/intermediate) that anyoned can learn. I believe this book would be a great addition to anyone's library of the arts. It is a great book with great historical pictures and is an easy read. Plus a bonus poster in the pocket in the back on Wai Khru Ram Muay. . .awesome.

I have been training with these shin guards for over a year. I felt a little awkward in the beginning. Once I get used to them, and they get used to me, I feel I'm kicking harder because I know my training opponent and I are protected. The adjustable velcro straps are much better design than the belt-buckle type. Those can come loose and cut you. I used to own one. These are a little pricey, but like they say, you get what you pay for. Besides, these pairs will last me at least another year easy.

Skilled Boxer and a Gifted Teacher
Please see my review of tape 1 in this series. The positive and negative comments apply to all the tapes/DVD's in this series. Only the techniques differ from tape to tape.

Basically, I agree with reviewer O.S. Baluch from London. This particular lesson covers blocking against kicks and elbows and countering techniques. Using the training pads is also addressed.

I can't say enough about how well thought-out these lessons are and how well presented they are. Mr. Janjira is truly a gifted person.

You just won't believe all the creative and cool techniques for training for all martial arts on this one tape he is a magician.

This tape has more on blocking plus tons of drills that can be used in any martial art.

You will learn the right way to use traditional pads as well as innovative and new pad drills that he has created himself.

He also shows how and why to use paper for kicking and punching.

Finaly a real book
The book "Muay Thai: Advanced Thai Kickboxing Techniques" by Christoph Delp shows that the author has gained experience in fighting and training in Thailand. The techniques range from basic up to some I haven't even heard of, despite the years I have worked out in Thailand. This book is very good to use additional to the daily work out in the gym. Of course a book can't teach you how to become a good fighter, but even some "professionals" should take the chance to re-read some of the excellent descriptions regarding the shown techniques! Additional to the good text work, the photos are making it easy to follow the different movements. Reading the book and the included interviews plus viewing the photos of the thai-stars and high officials, gives you an impression on how the special atmosphere in Thailand is like. All in all for me this is the only book that was written out of the view and the experiences of someone (a farang) who lived and practiced in Thailand not somewhere else! Excellent work.

This is an entirely exciting movie with Tony Jaa's impressive martial arts skills at its backbone, not to mention a complete movie realization by director Prachya Pinkaew. That is to say, the movie just flows, peaks, gets us on the edge of our seats and pleases us completely. To get into why this movie is so much fun is to note the nature of Muay Thai as a very powerful, forceful and explosive force, very much mirroring the nature of a good action movie. Whether it is Jaa's martial arts that are really so impressive, I do not know, I don't know the slightest thing about what it takes to do such stunts. However, I can say that Jaa's easy-going persona certainly plays a large part of his appeal. Yes, the scene climbing the stairs, knocking down 50 or so enemies is fantastic, as is his fight, reminiscing Bruce Lee and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, with scary Australian wrestler, because of his uncanny size and criminal record, Nathan Jones. There is also a scene with Eddy Gordo from Tekken 3...well a capoiera man with dreadlocks. Thai and Australian English are spoken, for those language buffs.

Muay Thai Boran: The Martial Art of Thailand

Disapointed
I am very familiar with Ajarn De Cesaris and his work. He is a very well versed practitioner of Muay Thai and Muay Boran. I liked his videos (mostly). I am however very disappointed with the book. I felt there was way too much tooting of his own horn and very little technical information. There was however plenty of historical information and perpectives from the author himself. But over and over again we hear how his organization is the one that did this or that. I know already your contribution and feel it unnecessary to hear it 25 times. I thought that someone as passionate about spreading the Thai National Arts would have given a little more technical information on the actual techniques vs. theories and perspectives. Indeed the only techniques or tricks actually described were the same ones described in Panya Kraitus' book over 15 years ago. Nothing new in the way of techniques here, only a few different angles on the history and traditions. In this book I feel he points out and exploits what to me is the obvious. We know Muay Thai has grown and become accepted worldwide. We know it is generally accepted amongst MMA fighters. We know the author has helped the movement towards the ancient style of Muay Thai "Muay Boran". We know Muay Thai is ever changing. If you have read any of the other books on Muay Thai you also know the basic Mae Mai and Look Mai techniques described in this book. although the authors perspectives are interesting this book seems much more of a marketing ploy to me to get you to buy the authors videos,attend his seminars or join his organization because if you don't... you will actually learn very little from this book.
